Urs Schönebaum
Light and set designer Urs Schönebaum studied photography in Munich and joined the Münchner Kammerspiele from 1995 to 1998. Afterwards he was also active as a directing assistant at the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Lincoln Center (New York) and at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
Since 2000 he works as a light designer for opera, theater, dance, and performances.
His work includes more than 200 productions. Urs Schönebaum has also developed the light designs for artists like Vanessa Beecroft, Anselm Kiefer, Dan Graham, Taryn Simon, Soundwalk Collective, William Kentridge and Marina Abramović.
In 2012 he directed and created light designs for the operas »Jetzt« (Mathis Nitschke) and »What Next?« in the Montpellier Opera; followed by the creation of »Happy Happy« in 2014. In 2017 he created the lighting and set for »Bomarzo« at the Teatro Real in Madrid, »Aus Licht« at the Holland Festival, »Apocalypse Arabe« at the Festival d'Aix en Provence and »Klangwolke 22« in Linz. In 2022 he staged and designed the 2nd act of the Walküre project at the Stuttgart State Theatre.
Urs Schönebaum designed the lighting for Sasha Waltz's »Kreatur« in 2017 and »Exodos« in 2018.
