Clémentine Deluy
Clémentine Deluy was born in 1978 in Marseille.
She began her classical dance education at the Ecole Nationale de Marseille. Her teacher Larrio Ekson opened her gaze to contemporary dance. A turning point in her dance education.
In 1995 she decided to orient herself towards contemporary dance and joined the same year the Conservatoire Supérieur de Musique et Danse of Lyon. In 1998, Clémentine moved to Germany to integrate the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen-Werden where she met Malou Airaudo who will be for Clémentine a turning point in her dance education. During her time in Essen she studied with teachers such as Dominique Mercy, Lutz Förster, Jean Cébron and Libby Nye.
In this period she dived into the world of Pina and enriched her knowledge of Pina Bausch’s works watching many performances in Wuppertal.
In 2001, Clémentine graduated from the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen-Werden. In 2002, while finishing her studies at the Folkwang Hochschule she joined the Tanztheater Wuppertal for the 1st time, as guest, dancing the Rite of Spring. But her pathway will bring her into an alternative horizon at the end of her studies. In 2002, she met the choreographer Sasha Waltz and joined the production noBody. At the end of the production, she was offered to join the company Sasha Waltz & Guests and participated in various works such as insideout, Impromptus, Dido & Aeneas and also learned the piece Körper during her time in the company. The same years she danced as well in pieces of Luc Dunberry and Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, like Anything Else, Don’t We.
In 2006 Clémentine became a member of the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. During this period she worked and danced Pina's repertoire. At Pina Bausch's request, she learned and performed her role in Café Müller.
She danced 17 pieces from the repertoire and was part of two creations: Bamboo Blues and Como el musguito en la Piedra ay si, si, si.
From 2014 on, Clémentine returned to further collaborations with Sasha Waltz & Guests. Her last production with Sasha Waltz is Beethoven 7.
As guests she joined new works with Pascal Merighi. Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio Esnaola, Fabien Prioville. Clémentine Deluy also took part of the movie Pina from Wim Wenders (2011) and the documentary Dancing Pina from Florian Heinzen-Ziob (2023).
Since 2019, Clémentine is one of the members of the artistic directors for the restaging of Iphigenia auf Tauris, a piece by Pina Bausch, for the Semperoper in Dresden, project lead by the Pina Bausch Foundation.
And the same year, she joined the project Commons ground[s]. Das Frühlingsopfer, co-production between Pina Bausch Foundation, Sadler’s Wells and l’École des sables. In 2021 she became one of the artistic directors for this project.
Clémentine gives international workshops for professional and amateur dancers.
Her aim is to continue her search of the vocabulary learned at the Folkwang Hochschule and link the different dance fields encountered during her professional background. With this in mind, in 2021 she carried out an in-depth research project on Professor Hans Züllig.
