A new format for professional dancers

While this finger-joint here bends itself until it can no further, the last vertebrae of that spine over there, atlas, bows in front of gravity. Some shoulders loosen their tension, spiraling around the collarbone. Levitating knees approach the ground allowing a next step to happen. While this hip bone here rotates, transfering weight from the heel to the foot edge, that elbow over there folds and hooks on to a neck and a shoulder blade pushes against some ribs. Once more come together to explore the voluntary or involuntary emerging connections of unprecedented events in collective movements.

CoinciDance integrates the anarchic experimental spirit of Open Studio with the focus on instant composition in groups. We want to find improvisation tools that guide the collective decision making when dancing with a bigger number of people, increasing the freedom and the complexity for the group. To explore a variety of different tools and concepts we invite different teachers that have expertise in collective improvisation techniques. They will share their practices, guide the beginning of the jam, and let the group play with the tools learned.

We are very lucky to welcome Jeremy Nelson and Luis Lara Malvacías to share their improvisation tools in this third edition of CoinciDance - guide us into the exploration of our personal movement habits and the curious rediscovery of their change and evolution. With their long experience in dance and improvisation they will open up pathways of creativity that we can experience in the open jam at the end of the workshop.

We decided - for now - to open this format only to professional or experienced dancers. If you want to participate, please send us your CV latest on 6th July. For all the non-professional dancers, don’t worry: Open Studio will continue to take place regularly and we might also try similar formats within Open Studio too, as we also believe that these skills should be available for everyone. To work and improvise more focused we will limit the number of participants to around 30. First come first served! Unlike for Open studio, we will have a limited number of musicians, who we will invite to perform live for the session. We are very happy that Yunjin Lee is joining this session! We kindly ask the other musicians to wait for the next Open Studio to come & join. Visual artists of all disciplines are welcome to get inspired and create art in the studio.
