»Roméo et Juliette« at Teatr Wielki

After the premiere in May 2024, the third series of performances of »Roméo et Juliette« with the Ballet of the Teatr Wielki will take place in Łódź the 14th and 15th of February. The most famous love story in the western canon will therefore be on show in Poland on Valentine's Day.

In »Roméo et Juliette« (2007), Sasha Waltz turned to one of the most moving love stories in world literature. The story of the star-crossed lovers, whose families are enemies and whose deaths bring understanding and reconciliation, is one of Shakespeare's most famous works. This dark tragedy inspired Hector Berlioz to compose the dramatic symphony »Roméo et Juliette« for three soloists, two large choruses and orchestra. The Opéra national de Paris and its Ballet commissioned Sasha Waltz to create the choreography. In the world premiere in 2007, stars Aurélie Dupont and Hervé Moreau danced the lovers who are only reunited in death.

In autumn 2012, »Roméo et Juliette« was included in La Scala's repertoire. In April 2015, »Roméo et Juliette« celebrated its premiere in Berlin as a co-production of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, La Scala and Sasha Waltz & Guests. There, »Roméo et Juliette« was danced for the first time by the dancers of the company Sasha Waltz & Guests, with whom Sasha Waltz had created her third choreographic opera in Berlin after »Dido & Aeneas« in 2005 and »Medea« in 2007, before initially transferring the work to the ballet ensembles in Paris and Milan.

After the premiere of the transfer to the Ballett of Teatr Wielki on 11 May 2024, »Roméo et Juliette« will be performed again on 14th and 15th February in Łódź.
