Revival: »Sacre« is returning to a Berlin stage

Following its revival at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele, »Sacre« will be performed in Barcelona from July 6 to 10.

Following its revival of »Sacre« at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele in June, we are delighted to present the piece for the 50th time at the Grand Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The timeless, archaic choreography by Sasha Waltz was developed in 2013 for the 100th anniversary of the musical work and premiered with the ballet of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, followed by a performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the world premiere venue of Stravinsky's ballet music. »Sacre« premiered as a concert version at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1928. Stravinsky's musical work has been performed a total of eighteen times in various adaptations at this venue - and will be performed there for the first time in July in a choreography by Sasha Waltz.

The choreography was added to the repertoire of Sasha Waltz & Guests after its premiere in St. Petersburg and was first performed in Berlin at the end of 2013 under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim with the Staatskapelle Berlin, supplemented by the »Scène d'Amour« from »Roméo et Juliette« by Hector Berlioz and Waltz's choreography »L'Après-midi d'un faune« to music by Claude Debussy.

Like many choreographies by Sasha Waltz & Guests, »Sacre« is a much-traveled piece. After its premiere in 2013 at the Mariinksy Theater in St. Petersburg, it was performed in Paris (2013), Cologne (2014), Moscow (2014), London (2015) and Wales (2016). In Spain, »Sacre« by Sasha Waltz & Guests has already been performed three times: it celebrated its Spanish premiere at the Madrid Teatro Real (2016) before being shown in San Sebastián and Pamplona in the same year. We are now delighted to be able to show »Sacre« at the Teatre del Liceu - a venue that has been so historically intertwined with the piece since 1928.

The title of Stravinsky's extraordinary work in the history of dance and music history is translated as »The Sacrifice of Spring« or »The Consecration of Spring«. The seemingly archaic, exciting and edgy composition is characterized by a strongly accentuated rhythm, abrupt

and the layering of constantly repeating musical motifs. Numerous almost noisy dissonances and the expressionistic sound impression made the work one of the most famous pieces of music of the modern avant-garde.
