Revival: »Sacre« is returning to a Berlin stage

The choreography by Sasha Waltz at Haus der Berliner Festspiele, June 27 through 30 - ticket sales start on 18 January.

After a 5-year break, the revival of Sasha Waltz' choreography

»Sacre« based on the modern key work »Le Sacre du Printemps« by Igor Stravinsky is on the program from June 27th to 30th, 2024 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele. From January 18th, tickets for all four performances are available.

The timeless, archaic choreography by Sasha Waltz was developed in 2013 for the 100th anniversary of the musical work and premiered with the ballet of the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg, followed by a performance at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, the location of the world premiere of Stravinsky's ballet music.

The choreography was then included in the repertoire of Sasha Waltz & Guests and was shown for the first time in Berlin at the end of 2013 under the musical direction of Daniel Barenboim with the Staatskapelle Berlin. The evening was last performed at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin

in the summer of 2019 supplemented by »Scène d'Amour« from »Roméo et Juliette« by Hector Berlioz and Waltz's choreography »L'Après-midi d'un faune« to the music of Claude Debussy.

Earlier large-format pieces of Sasha Waltz’, amongst others »Na Zemlje«

(1998) or »Continu« (2010), have already showcased elements of her

research into rites and group dynamics. With her choreography of Igor

Stravinsky’s »Le Sacre du Printemps«, she dedicates an entire piece to

these themes.

Trailer »Sacre«

Its title translates to »The Rite of Spring«. The strikingly archaic, tension-charged and angular composition is characterized by a strongly emphasized rhythm, precipitous drops and a layering of constantly repeating musical motives. Its many almost noise-like dissonances and

expressionist sonic impressions have made the work one of the most

famous pieces of music of the modern avant-garde.
