Sasha Waltz & Guests online: Due to the necessary measurements regarding the corona pandemic we are unable to perform live on stage at the moment. But to make up for it three choreographies of Sasha Waltz are currently available worldwide online on ARTE Concert until the beginning of May 2020.
Amongst the selection is the filmic version of Sasha Waltz’ choreography »Allee der Kosmonauten« (1996), available on ARTE Concert for streaming worldwide until 8 Mai 2020 – click here for the Video-on-Demand.
Created at the cusp of a new epoch, the choreographic approach of »Allee der Kosmonauten« has become legendary: the events of the piece center on the living room couch of a high-rise apartment in the Berlin suburb of Marzahn. Within this confined space, the feelings and movements of three generations of a Berlin family build up dangerously. The inhabitants bury their feelings in lethargy or abandon themselves to feedback loops caused by cramped living conditions. The choreographic encounter with this anxious space, crowded and colliding, triggers solutions at the limit of danceability. The lack of tenderness gives rise to uncomfortable comedy. The piece recounts an era of living together without escape routes.
From April 2nd to 13th 2020 Sasha Waltz & Guests had planned to present a retrospective at the Volksbühne Berlin. Part of the programme, which also encompassed an exhibition and film programme as well as performative interventions, would have been Sasha Waltz‘ »Allee der Kosmonauten«.
In 1996, the world premiere opened the Sophiensaele, a then new venue for the performing arts in Berlin. Since then the production has toured nationally and internationally and celebrated its 150th performances at the Volksbühne Berlin in March 2019. 1998 a filmic version of »Allee der Kosmonauten« was made for ARTE/ZDF directed by Sasha Waltz, which received the Adolf-Grimme-Preis in 2000. In cooperation with ARTE/ZDF this movie is now online on ARTE Concert, available for online streaming worldwide until 8 May.
On the occasion of the online-streamings we have gone though our archive to give our audience some further insights into the choreography. Enjoy!
