St. John Passion
In spring 2024, Sasha Waltz will dedicate herself to an outstanding sacred work in music history for the first time with the »St. John Passion« (BWV 245) by Johann Sebastian Bach. To mark the 300th anniversary of its premiere, she stages it in her choreography as a universal, timeless story about the human search for truth, justice and hope, even beyond its religious origins.
While the »St. John Passion« deals with human themes such as power and powerlessness, violence and betrayal as well as the longing for redemption, Bach's music in conjunction with the language of dance is able to provide comfort in dark times.
Sasha Waltz brings her vision of the »St. John Passion« to life under the musical direction of Leonardo García Alarcón together with 11 dancers from Sasha Waltz & Guests, the Cappella Mediterranea, the Chœur de chambre de Namur, the choir of the Opéra de Dijon and well-known soloists like Georg Nigl and Christian Immler, all moving together on stage.
The production of the Opéra de Dijon in co-production with Sasha Waltz & Guests and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées will open the Salzburg Easter Festival on March 22, 2024, before celebrating its French premiere in Dijon on March 30.
The world premiere will take place on March 22, 2024 as part of the Salzburg Easter Festival.
