From complexity to action
Sasha Waltz & Guests
13. – 15. Dezember 2019
As in the previous »Zuhören« editions, Sasha Waltz & Guests will design the central room of the hall as a place for encounters, communal dining and music. The company’s design and technical team recycles elements from stage sets and the prop warehouse. From here, »FutureLeaks« starts its all-day immersive course on Saturday and Sunday, inviting you to rewrite the future. Also on Saturday and Sunday, the initiative »Restlos Glücklich« will bring »saved« food in tastefully creative preparations to the table together with the audience. The »World Human Forum« offers »society games« in the hall, based on the 17 UN-sustainability goals. The studios in the upper floors invite guests to a quiet concentrated atmosphere with films, books and different workshops as well as smaller discussions and performances. The artist Olaf Baldini accompanies the weekend with live drawings.
Friday, December 13th, starting 7pm
As an introduction to the complex topic of climate change, Oscar nominated US-American director and performer Josh Fox opens »Zuhören #4« on Friday evening with his solo performance »The Truth Has Changed«. Josh Fox’s opening will be supplemented by three different voices: Quang Paasch from the movement »Fridays for Future« speaks for the young generation, while the researcher Grace Mbungu offers a perspective of the Global South, and the marine biologist and polar researcher Antje Boetius will contribute a German-European perspective. Subsequently there is space for exchange with the audience. The evening ends with the Late Night Concert »Branches«: Joseph Houston (piano) and Sarah Saviet (violin) examine the interface between music and nature on the basis of selected compositions – accompanied by unusual sound bodies, beyond the classical concert situation.
Saturday, December 14th, starting 2pm
The day will open with a warm-up during a joint Dabke dance with Medhat Aldaabal and Ali Hasan. Since 2018, the two Syrian artists, together with Sasha Waltz & Guests and Berlin Mondiale have been developing a new form, e. g. at radialsystem, which combines traditional elements of the circle dance with the internationality of Berlin and inspires many people. After a subsequent kick-off with the natural scientist Antje Boetius, various initiatives will offer workshops on the subject of climate change and becoming active. Starting from dance, »Zuhören« starts here with art and body, but consciously opens up to nutrition, the connection between personal development and structural change, finance and empowerment: »How artistic can political activism be?« ask film and theatre director Josh Fox and director Lucy Martens. »What does sustainable food management look like« shows »Restlos Glücklich«. »How can resistance be experienced physically?« – a theme for Extinction Rebellion and Amazon Solidarity Berlin. »Can we write down the positive news we want to read in the future ourselves?« ask the artists of FutureLeaks and »How can complex tensions around conflicts be transformed into positive energy through dialogue and listening?« observes Bernard le Roux from Gothenburg. Finally, urgewald addresses the question »How can I become active as a bank client for climate justice?«
The dinner brings everyone together again and leads into the second part of the day: With the dance piece »Teqsi muyu marq’ay – A Warm Embrace for the Earth«, the teens group of Sasha Waltz & Guests’ children’s dance company presents their artistic confrontation with climate change and climate justice in the context of indigenous people and their values. The young people thus open the space for a subsequent discussion with the author Andreas Weber, the dancer and choreographer Luz Zenaida Hualpa Garcia and another guest on the subject of »indigenousity«. The live electronics concert »Static motion« with Chilenean composer, musician and actor Diego Noguera Berger turns into a party with DJ SeSe aka the sleeping Phoenix and closes the circle of twelve hours of »Zuhören« with dance.
Sunday, December 15th, startimg 2pm
By facing complex crises in our globalized world, people all over the world feel powerless. At the same time, civic engagement is growing to become a reality. What role do listening and dialogue play in the further development of democracy and local and global cooperation in dealing with climate change? The third and final day of »Zuhören #4« is dedicated to these and other questions. The day opens with a joint warm-up »Collective Intelligence in Motion« with the Colombian dance choreographer Gabriel Galindez Cruz, who has been working for Sasha Waltz & Guests for many years and heads two groups of the children’s dance company. Together with »Das Progressive Zentrum«, the Berlin think tank founded in 2007 with the current focus on the future of democracy, structural change and international relations, »Zuhören #4« presents a discussion with German and international guests on the triad of climate, change and democracy. Political economist Maja Göpel and political scientist Lex Paulson talk to journalist Maria Exner and educator and mediator Bernard le Roux, moderated by Janis Prinz, trainee of »Das Progressive Zentrum«. Also on Sunday, the participants of »Zuhören« can become active themselves again: At »Meet the speakers« in the hall, the participants can continue to talk directly with each other in small groups. Angela Baldini from »The Presencing Institute« invites participants to experience what active listening brings about when you become aware of factors that prevent you from listening. Morris Clay and Pedro Jardim of »Revision« address the question how to better analyze risks of emerging technologies in order to advance a sustainable human society and benefit all life forms. »Restlos glücklich« once again invites us to cut vegetables and reflect on sustainable nutrition, »FutureLeaks« continues to travel into the future and write news for a better tomorrow and the »World Human Forum« playfully approaches the 17 UN sustainability goals. The Romanian dancer and choreographer Sergiu Matis invites us to the top floor of radialsystem and in his performative sound installation »Extinction Room« impressively demonstrates the extinction of species. After the shared dinner »Zuhören #4« ends with a jam of all the weekend’s musicians led by Cymin Samawatie and invites all listeners to the stage. At the end there is dance with the artist Samar Habibi that takes the »Zuhören«-audience through a wave of »5 Rhythms« ending in silence.
