In August 2019 two important choreographies from Sasha Waltz & Guests’ repertory are returning to Berlin after longer pauses: From August 7th through 11th »Impromptus« (2004), Sasha Waltz’ first work with classical music, will be performed at the Radialsystem. Her first choreographic opera »Dido & Aeneas« (2005) will come back to its place of origin, the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, with a new cast of soloists, starting August 18th. Ticket sales start on May 2nd respectively 4th.
Henry Purcell’s opera »Dido & Aeneas«, a myth of flight, expulsion and love in times of war, is often described as the oldest love story in English opera. Together with 12 dancers and 51 musicians, choristers and soloists, Sasha Waltz has created her own interpretation of the opera, the emotional and multi-faceted world of this, Purcell’s only complete opera, being the starting point for the choreographic work.
»Dido & Aeneas« marked the beginning of Sasha Waltz’ work on choreogaphic opera. The choreographic transposition of the opera and the expansion of musical theatre through the medium of dance are at the heart of the production. With »Dido & Aeneas«, Sasha Waltz successfully combines dance, music and song in a completely new way, singers and choristers are part of an overall choreography, which sets them loose from their original roles and functions. Sasha Waltz’s choregraphy goes far beyond the mere illustration of the opera’s story.
In August 2019 the production will return to Berlin with a new cast of singers: The parts of Dido and Aeneas will be sung by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis and baritone Nikolay Borchev, alongside them will perform soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou, mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini, bass-baritone and dancer Yannis Francois as well as tenors Ziad Nehme and Michael Smallwood.

In »Impromptus« (2004) Sasha Waltz researches the existential questions of the human body with its vulnerability and beauty. Dance at its most riveting, at once unmasking, manipulating, and ultimately exalting in the innumerable aspects that make us human. The music is performed live on stage and with vocal accompaniment of four »Schubert-Lieder«. The dance like the music in a subtle way create emotional states between weightless floating and being off balance. Sasha Waltz with this production for the first time developed a dance piece based on the structure of a classical music composition.
