Sasha Waltz‘ »Dido & Aeneas« with new soloist-cast in Berlin

Sasha Waltz‘ first choreographic opera »Dido & Aeneas« by Henry Purcell returns to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin in summer 2019, where the new cast of singers will have their Berlin debut on August 18th under the musical direction of Christopher Moulds.

The part of Dido will be sung by mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis, baritone Nikolay Borchev will take over the part of Aeneas. Other soloists are soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou, mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini, bass-baritone Yannis François as well as the tenors Ziad Nehme and Michael Smallwood.

Henry Purcell’s music tells the story of the Carthaginian Queen Dido and the Trojan Prince Aeneas whose love is tragically obstructed by the arising animosity between the empires they represent. As the first of this opera’s modern interpreters, Sasha Waltz rendered its multi-layered emotional world into a choreography which involves the vocalists as equal participants and thus merges dance and opera into one single artform.
