»noBody« reprised – Werkschau at Volksbühne Berlin

In Spring 2020 Sasha Waltz & Guests continues its collaboration with Volksbühne Berlin. From April 2nd to 13th the company will present selected works by Sasha Waltz from different periods of her oeuvre framed by a program of exhibitions, films and artistic interventions. Ticket sales have started.

The Werkschau kicks off on April 2nd with a reprise of Sasha Waltz’ choreography »noBody«, which was last staged in Berlin in 2008. On April 7th and 8th the company presents »Allee der Kosmonauten«, on April 10th to 13th »rauschen«.

»noBody«, the third and last part of Sasha Waltz’ renowned choreographic cycle »Körper« (1999-2002), premiered at the Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz in 2002 and reached an international audience touring world wide. It was adapted into the repertory of the Göteborg Ballet in 2012. »noBody« deals with metaphysical levels to human existence. It addresses the absence of the body and confronts us with feelings aroused by our realisation of being mortal. What does being human mean beyond having a body? Which part of us is immortal? In »noBody«, the choreographer and 23 dancers face the challenge of visualizing the non-physical through the physical.

In 1996, »Allee der Kosmonauten« was the first premiere at the newly founded Sophiensaele in Berlin Mitte. Created at the cusp of a new epoch, the piece recounts an era of living together without an escape route. In a housing block in former East Berlin, feelings and movements of a three generation family build up dangerously around their living room couch. The uncomfortably comical exploration of this anxious space, crowded and colliding, triggers solutions at the limits of danceability.

Sasha Waltz’s new project in co-production with Volksbühne Berlin deals with a society which, within the sceneries of its perfect living spaces, has lost sight of the world. Through states of groundlessness, the choreography with 12 dancers drifts into a revelatory process.
