Sasha Waltz’ choreography »Körper« (2000) in 2019 already travelled to Singapore and Portland, Orgeon in the US. Towards the end of the year the production can now be seen during the Festival de Danse in Cannes.
Created in 1985 by the City of Cannes, the Dance Festival developed into one of the biggest international festivals of dance. The creation of this Festival is part of a historical relationship of the City of Cannes with the world of Dance thanks to the momentum generated by the opening of the International Dance Center Rosella Hightower in 1961. Since 1993, at the rate of a biennale, the event has found its identity, based on many creations presenting new talents in the choreographic scene and the work of major international companies.
Sasha Waltz‘ »Körper« with the soundscape of Hans Peter Kuhn through a sober recognition of the body’s materiality tries to understand the fundamental split imposed on us by our physical nature. It interrogates cultural templates for movement, brutal forms of pleasure, enhanced performance and cosmetic improvement: the body regarded as a resource. Why do we treat our fragility with such severity? Why do our accounts of our own bodies always bypass what we actually feel? Naked to the skeleton, to the kidneys, the piece submits the body to an even more radical undressing: the removal of the names which afflict and conceal it at every turn. Twisting and turning the body, taking it down wrong paths, over and over again this choreography begins the work of a genuine making-visible. The body appears as something never before seen.
