Sasha Waltz’ choreography »Roméo et Juliette« will be performed at the Deutsche Oper Berlin on 6. 7. 9. 10. September. Next to the dancers of Sasha Waltz & Guests the audience can see Etoiles of the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris in these evenings.
When the production »Roméo et Juliette« by Sasha Waltz can be seen again at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in September, the audience has the chance to experience something unique: Next to the dancers of Sasha Waltz and guests the leading roles will be performed by Etoiles of the Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris, Ludmila Pagliero (Juliette) and Germain Louvet (Roméo), as well as by first soloist Alessio Carbone (Frère Laurent). They recently danced the highly acclaimed reprise of the piece at the Opéra Bastille in Paris in April 2018.
The infamous tragic story of the two young lovers »Roméo et Juliette« and their antagonized families in 1839 inspired the french composer Hector Berlioz to write his »symphonie dramatique«, a large-scale choral symphony. Sasha Waltz narrates this dark love story through powerful, dynamic, but at the same time tender movements: from playfully light but yet vivid duets and solos ranging to grand tableaus with soloists, dancers and the choir on a moving opera stage.
Developed in 2007, this choreography was Sasha Waltz’ first work with a grand classical balletensemble. Commissioned by Brigitte Levèfre for the Opéra national de Paris the piece had its world premiere at the Opéra Bastille on 5th October 2007. The part of Juliette was performed by the former Etoile of the Parisian ballet and it’s current direction, Aurélie Dupont, at the side of Hervé Moreau as Roméo. »Roméo et Juliette« in December 2012 was transferred into the repertory of the Milanese Teatro alla Scala.
The choreography by Sasha Waltz was originally developed together with her dancers at Sasha Waltz & Guests, who also accompanied her in transferring the piece to the ensembles at the Opéra national de Paris in 2007 and the Milanese Teatro alla Scala in 2012.
The Berlin audience had to wait until 2015, when the production »Roméo et Juliette« finally came to Berlin after having been performed and reprised very successfully in Paris and Milan. On 18th April 2015 the piece had its German premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin performed by Sasha Waltz & Guests under the musical direction by Donald Runnicles.
