In 2005 »Dido & Aeneas« marked the beginning of Sasha Waltz’ almost 10 year long work on »choreographic opera«. After a longer break the production will now return to the stage in Madrid and Berlin with a brand new cast of singers.
Henry Purcell’s »Dido & Aeneas« is often described as the oldest love story in English opera. Together with 12 dancers and 51 musicians, choristers and soloists, Sasha Waltz has created her own interpretation of the opera, the emotional and multi-faceted world of this, Purcell’s only complete opera, being the starting point for the choreographic work.
»Dido & Aeneas« was a double premiere for choreographer Sasha Waltz: It was her first opera production and it marked the beginning of her work on choreogaphic opera. The choreographic transposition of the opera and the expansion of musical theatre through the medium of dance are at the heart of the production. With »Dido & Aeneas«, Sasha Waltz successfully combines dance, music and song in a completely new way, singers and choristers are part of an overall choreography, which sets them loose from their original roles and functions. In Dido’s final aria, it is no longer clear who is a singer, dancer, soloist or choir member. With the help of the impressive ensemble, Sasha Waltz’s choregraphy goes far beyond the mere illustration of the opera’s story.
The opera »Dido & Aeneas«, a myth of flight, expulsion and love in times of war was acclaimed at its premiere in 2005 at the Grand Théatre de Luxembourg and at countless guest performances since. In March 2019 the production will celebrate its 80th performance with the premiere of a new cast of singers at the Teatro Real in Madrid. The parts of Dido and Aeneas will be sung by internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Marie-Claude Chappuis and baritone Nikolay Borchev, alongside them will perform soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou, mezzo-soprano Luciana Mancini, bass-baritone and dancer Yannis Francois as well as tenors Ziad Nehme and Michael Smallwood.
In the season 2019/20 the production will then return to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin where the new cast will have their Berlin premiere on August 18th.
