»Dido & Aeneas« on tour at Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele

From May 20th to 22nd 2022 Sasha Waltz’ first and iconic choreographic opera will come to the Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele for the first time – ticket sales are open.

Sasha Waltz’s legendary choreographic opera »Dido & Aeneas« begins with a leap into the depths of the sea. The underlying musical theatre by Henry Purcell condenses the heroic epic to a few plot elements: The gods disapprove of the Carthaginian queen’s encounter with the Trojan prince and sabotage their love. Just reunited, the couple must part again; a human tragedy takes its course in which the unspeakable despair of two isolated individuals turns their passion into hate. When Aeneas leaves the Carthaginian queen Dido, she breathes out her love and, in the end, her life in her lament.

Sasha Waltz has re-imagined the oldest love story in English opera with the language of dance. To deepen the tense plots and multi-layered emotional worlds, the choreographer combines musical theatre with the theatrical possibilities of dance. Spatial divisions are abolished, and singers and dancers perform the title characters simultaneously. With an interdisciplinary ensemble, Sasha Waltz’s production goes far beyond the mere illustration of the action. Together with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Vocalconsort Berlin under the direction of Christopher Moulds, dance and opera merge into a single art form.
